1066 is a war strategy flash game developed by Preloaded, published by Channel 4 and released on May 15, 2009.

Although Flash was discontinued on January 12 2021, 1066 is still playable through BlueMaxima’s Flashpoint.

Gameplay[]

1066 features both a singleplayer and multiplayer mode. In this single player mode, the player has the option to either play through the narrative driven campaign or play a skirmish battle. The campaign has the player fight through the historical battle of Hastings that took place in the year 1066, hence the game’s name. Throughout the game, the player will take control of the English, Viking and Norman armies.

The player’s main objective in each battle is to defeat the enemy, either by killing all of their soldiers of by scarring them away. Battles take place in three key phases. Firstly, the player must select which unit types they would like to take part in the battle and how many of each. This is done via a point spending system with each different type of unit costing a different amount of points.

The second phase of the battle is the “select commands” phase. Here the player must give each of their units one command that they will execute once the battle begins. The commands are:

  • Move: move your troops left, right and across rows
  • Fire: shoot a volley of arrows into enemy lines
  • Taunt: insult the enemy, lowering their morale and increasing your own
  • Fortify: strengthens a unit’s defence by preparing them for an attack
  • Break: breaks a formation, allowing individual unit orders again

Once the player has given all of their units commands, they must select “execute commands” which will start the third phase of the battle in which all actions will be performed and the player has the chance to be thrown into mini games in order to help turn the tide of the battle for their army. After all actions from both armies have been played out, the player will return to the select commands phase and the cycle repeats until one army is victorious.
