Bloons Monkey City is a town simulator game developed by Ninja Kiwi as a spin-off of Bloons Tower Defense 5. First released on November 25th, 2013 on Ninja Kiwi's website, and then on Kongregate on November 19th, 2014, the game involves running a monkey city and expanding its territory by capturing nearby tiles through rounds of tower defense battles against the Bloons.

The game also received an expanded version that has extra content; this version is available on mobile devices and Steam.

Gameplay[]

The game opens on a small city set in the middle of an ever-expanding landscape full of procedurally-generated tiles that are occupied by Bloons. To capture a tile, you'll have to play a set of rounds which involve setting up towers to stop Bloons from reaching the end of a track, just like in a Bloons Tower Defense game. The number of rounds and the types of Bloons that appear during a tile's battle depend on the difficulty level of that tile; tiles' difficulty levels are generally relative to the XP level of your city, but gradually get harder and harder overall the more you expand your city. Additionally, each tile features a different terrain that restricts a few towers and favors a few others.

Unlike in most BTD games, you don't get an infinite supply of towers, nor can you access their upgrades initially; in order to increase the number of towers you can use in battle, unlock new towers, and unlock tower upgrades, you need to build buildings in your city that correspond to those towers or upgrades. Capturing tiles and building buildings earns you XP for your city, which increases your city level; reaching higher city levels lets you gain access to more powerful upgrades within your city. Additionally, reaching certain city levels also lets you gain entry to various multiplayer events in the game which let you fight and compete against other players.

Towers[]

  • Dart Monkey: A normal monkey that throws darts at Bloons. Each dart pops one Bloon. Costs $200.
  • Tack Shooter: A machine that shoots tacks in eight directions. Costs $360.
  • Sniper Monkey: A monkey armed with a sniper rifle that has infinite range, letting him hit Bloons anywhere on the screen. Each sniper shot pops two layers off of a Bloon. Costs $350.
  • Boomerang Monkey: A monkey that throws boomerangs which follow a curved path back to the Boomerang Monkey. Each boomerang can hit up to three Bloons at a time. Costs $380.
  • Ninja Monkey: A monkey that throws shurikens at Bloons and can detect Camo Bloons. Each shuriken pops one Bloon. Costs $500.
  • Pineapple: A seemingly ordinary pineapple that explodes three seconds after being placed. Costs $25.
  • Ice Monkey: A magical monkey that periodically unleashes blasts of frost, freezing any Bloon caught in his range. Costs $380.
  • Road Spikes: A pile of spikes that can be placed on the track to pop Bloons on contact. Each pile has 10 spikes, and one spike is used up every time a Bloon touches the pile. Costs $30.
  • Bomb Shooter: A cannon that shoots bombs at Bloons, creating explosions that damage any Bloon caught in the blast. Costs $650.
  • Glue Gunner: A monkey that shoots glue at Bloons, slowing them down. Costs $270.
  • Monkey Buccaneer: A monkey piloting a pirate ship that shoots giant darts which can pierce through several Bloons at once. The Monkey Buccaneer can only be placed in water. Costs $500.
  • Monkey Ace: A monkey piloting an airplane that flies above the track in a figure-eight pattern, sometimes shooting darts in eight directions as it flies. The Monkey Ace comes with a runway that has to be placed on flat ground for the Ace to fly around. Costs $900.
  • Super Monkey: A superhero monkey who throws darts at an incredibly fast rate. Costs $3,500.
  • Monkey Apprentice: A monkey that shoots magic bolts that seek out Bloons. Each magic bolt can pop two Bloons. Costs $550.
  • Monkey Village: A straw hut that reduces the cost of all nearby towers and their upgrades by 10%. Costs $1,600.
  • Banana Farm: A small farm building that gives you extra money during each round in the form of banana bunches worth $20 each that it drops on the ground - it initially gives four bunches per round, but can be upgraded to give more. The banana bunches can be collected by hovering your mouse over them, but if you don't collect them fast enough they get rotten and disappear (it takes 10 seconds for a banana bunch to spoil). Costs $1,000.
  • Mortar Tower: An artillery cannon manned by a monkey, which launches explosive shells that rain down on Bloons at a specific point. The Mortar Tower has infinite range and you can choose where it shoots at any time, although it's somewhat inaccurate. Costs $750.
  • Dartling Gun: A gatling gun manned by a monkey, which fires darts at a very fast rate but is somewhat inaccurate. The Dartling Gun has infinite range and can be aimed at any point on the screen by pointing your cursor at a specific spot. Costs $950.
  • Spike Factory: A machine that constantly produces piles of Road Spikes and drops them onto the track, making it great for guarding exits. Each pile created by the Spike Factory has five Road Spikes. Costs $750.
  • Monkey Engineer: A monkey that shoots nails from a nail gun. The nail gun has a high fire rate and each nail can hit up to three Bloons. Costs $450.

Bloons[]

Normal Bloons[]

These are the standard Bloon types that look like normal balloons. They only take a few hits to pop, but they come in large numbers and some types have immunity to certain tower attacks.

  • Red Bloon: The most basic Bloon. Moves slowly and spawns nothing when popped.
  • Blue Bloon: Moves a little faster and spawns a Red Bloon when popped.
  • Green Bloon: Moves at moderate speed and spawns a Blue Bloon when popped.
  • Yellow Bloon: Moves fast and spawns a Green Bloon when popped.
  • Pink Bloon: Moves very fast and spawns a Yellow Bloon when popped.
  • Black Bloon: Moves as fast as a Blue Bloon and spawns two Pink Bloons when popped. Is immune to explosive attacks.
  • White Bloon: Moves slightly faster than a Black Bloon and spawns two Pink Bloons when popped. Is immune to ice attacks.
  • Zebra Bloon: Moves as fast as a Green Bloon and spawns a Black Bloon and a White Bloon when popped. Is immune to both explosive attacks and ice attacks.
  • Lead Bloon: A Bloon made of metal. Moves as fast as a Red Bloon and spawns two Black Bloons when popped. Is immune to attacks from sharp things and wind attacks.
  • Rainbow Bloon: Moves as fast as a Green Bloon and spawns two Zebra Bloons when popped.
  • Ceramic Bloon: A Bloon made of clay. Moves faster than a Rainbow Bloon, takes 10 hits to pop, and spawns two Rainbow Bloons when popped. Can't be slowed down by glue, but can still be popped by glue shot by a Glue Gunner with the Corrosive Glue upgrade.

Bloon Properties[]

Bloon Properties are special attributes that can be applied to any of the normal Bloon types. They grant the Bloons additional abilities that make them harder to deal with.

  • Regrow: Regrow Bloons are able to regenerate their layers, eventually growing back to their original size if left untouched for too long. This can be especially problematic for Bloons that spawn more than one Bloon when popped, as each child Bloon will grow back to the size of the original Bloon that spawned them. Bloons with the Regrow property are shaped like hearts.
  • Camo: Camo Bloons have stealth capabilities and can only be attacked by towers that have the ability to detect them (although a select few towers have the ability to permanently remove the Camo property from Bloons). Camo Bloons have a camouflage pattern printed on them.

MOAB-Class Bloons[]

These are boss-level Bloons that take the form of giant blimps with many smaller Bloons inside of them. They take many hits to pop and can't be frozen or slowed down by glue. If one of these escapes, it's an instant game over due to the sheer number of Bloons inside of them.

  • MOAB (Massive Ornery Air Blimp): A big blimp that moves as fast as a Red Bloon, takes 200 hits to pop, and spawns four Ceramic Bloons when popped.
  • BFB (Brutal Floating Behemoth): A bigger blimp that moves slower than a MOAB, takes 400 hits to pop, and spawns four MOABs when popped.
  • ZOMG (Zeppelin of Mighty Gargantuaness): An even bigger blimp that moves slower than a BFB, takes 4,000 hits to pop, and spawns four BFBs when popped. Aside from the standard MOAB-Class immunities, the ZOMG is also either immune or resistant to several activated abilities that are normally effective at destroying lesser MOAB-Class Bloons.
  • DDT (Dark Dirigible Titan): A weak but dangerous blimp that moves as fast as a Pink Bloon, takes 300 hits to pop, and spawns six Camo Regrow Ceramic Bloons when popped. Aside from the standard MOAB-Class immunities, the DDT is also immune to sharp things and explosive attacks, and has the Camo property.

Worlds[]

Initially, Bloons Monkey City only had one world, but a later update added a second world with new content where you can have a second city.

  • Grassy Pass: A grassland area where your first city is established. It contains a wide mix of tile terrains, but mostly features Grass, Forest, and Heavy Forest tiles.
  • Bloon Dunes: A desert area that is unlocked once your Grassy Pass city reaches level 15. It predominantly features Desert tiles, and also introduces three new terrains - the Badlands, High Desert, and Arid Grassland.

Tiles[]

Difficulties[]

  • Trivial: Indicates a tile so easy it can be beaten with no issues whatsoever. Tiles with this difficulty give you the option of skipping over them entirely instead of playing them normally, though doing this gives you no XP.
  • Easy: Indicates a tile that the average player can beat easily.
  • Medium: Indicates a tile that most players can beat with some difficulty.
  • Hard: Indicates a tile that may cause some problems for players.
  • Very Hard: Indicates a tile that can be challenging if you're underprepared.
  • Impoppable: Indicates a tile that even experienced players may have great difficulty beating.

Tile Types[]

A tile's type is indicated by what kind of Bloon appears on top of the tile when you hover over it; whichever Bloon appears over any given tile tells you what kinds of Bloons will be in that tile, as well as how many rounds it will have. Certain tiles may also feature Camo or Regrow Assaults, which is when a tile has a much higher amount of Camo or Regrow Bloons than normal.

Special Missions[]

Special Missions are unique terrains that are rarer than the standard terrain types and present challenges with special rules. For some of these missions, beating them for the first time will earn you a special item that permanently buffs one of your towers; afterwards, they give you Bloonstones instead, along with the usual city cash and XP.

Mission Objective Rewarded Item
Wattle Trees Beat 25 rounds using only Boomerang Monkeys. You get a free Boomerang Monkey every 3 rounds. Road Spikes and Pineapples are allowed. Enchanted Boomerang: Lets your Boomerang Monkeys' boomerangs hit one extra Bloon per throw, bringing the total up to four.
Tranquil Glade Beat 25 rounds using only Dart Monkeys, Ninja Monkeys, and Super Monkeys. All the Bloons are Camo Bloons. Ninja Scrolls: Increases the attack speed of all Ninja Monkeys by 5%.
Sticky Sap Plant Beat 22 rounds. Each round gives you much less money than normal, but the map for this mission features two sap plants that each have an activated ability to cover all Bloons onscreen with corrosive glue. Extra Sticky Substance: Makes your Glue Gunners' glue last 20% longer and have a 5% stronger slowdown.
Shipwreck Beat 22 rounds. Every tower except the Monkey Buccaneer costs double their normal price (along with their upgrades), but the map for this mission features four whirlpools that each have an activated ability that lets them suck up nearby Bloons. None
Glacier Beat 25 rounds where all Bloons move half as fast as normal, but they only give you half the cash when popped. Shard of Everfrost: Increases the attack speed of all Ice Monkeys by 5% and makes their freezes last for 5% longer.
MOAB Graveyard Beat 3 rounds of MOAB-Class Bloons; round 1 has ten MOABs, round 2 has 6 BFBs, and round 3 has 2 ZOMGs. You start with $30,000. None
Phase Crystal Beat 26 rounds where all Bloons move twice as fast as normal, but the map for this mission features five giant crystals that each have an activated ability that lets them destroy nearby Bloons with a burst of energy. None
Concecrated Ground Beat 10 rounds using only Monkey Apprentices and Super Monkeys. You start with $30,000. None
Sandstorm Beat 18 rounds where each new round is started automatically instead of the game stopping between rounds, but you have access to the Sandstorm ability - an activated ability which summons a sandstorm that strips Bloons of their layers over 10 seconds. None
ZZZZOMG Beat one round which consists of one ZOMG. You start with only the normal amount of starting cash ($650), but you earn $500 every five seconds. Cuddly Bear: Unlocks the Cuddly Bear ability - an activated ability that gives you 20 extra lives. The ability can only be used once per round.
Dry as a Bone Beat 26 rounds where you don't get cash from popping Bloons, but the map for this mission features two partially upgraded Banana Farms which give you a steady income. You also have access to the Rainstorm ability - an activated ability that makes both Banana Farms immediately emit a burst of bananas, giving you a big cash boost. None

Buildings[]

Base Buildings[]

Base Buildings are buildings that grant you extra towers to use in battle against the Bloons. They cost power and city cash to build, and reward XP once their construction is finished. Each Base Building built grants you one extra tower type corresponding to the respective Base Building (except for the Pineapple Stand and Spike Shack, which each give you five extra Pineapples and Road Spike stacks - additionally, Banana Farms have no Base Building and are instead unlocked once you build their Uograde Building, the Micro Agriculture Development Building). When playing the game for the first time, you start with two Dart Monkey Halls already built in your city.

Trivia[]

  • There used to be a Ceramic Bloon Pack tile type which featured a much higher amount of Ceramic Bloons than normal and could feature MOABs and BFBs, but it was removed from the game.
