Epic Battle Fantasy 3 is the third game in the Epic Battle Fantasy series. It's the first game in the series to be a "proper" RPG, as it contains many features typically found in most RPGs that weren't present in the previous two installments.
Links[]
Epic Battle Fantasy 3 is also available on Steam as a free-to-play game. This Steam version has received some balance changes to make it slightly easier compared to the original flash version.
Controls[]
- Arrow Keys/WASD: Move characters (on the overworld map)
- Space Bar: Interact (talk to NPCs, open chests, challenge enemies, etc. on the overworld map)
- Mouse: Interact with game menus
Plot[]
After defeating and then befriending Lance, the man who tried to take over the world, Matt and Natalie have decided to team up with him to become a trio and go on adventures together! After many adventures together, the three heroes come across an ancient tomb containing the body of Akron, an ancient demonic deity who is so incredibly powerful that ancient warriors had to seal him away to stop him from destroying the world. The heroes foolishly decide to poke Akron's body, which causes him to awaken and let out a magic blast that drains the heroes' power, scatters their equipment across the land, and transports them to a distant town! Now, the heroes must forge north to make their way back to Akron's tomb and destroy him before he becomes too powerful so they can get revenge and save the world from his wrath!
Gameplay[]
Unlike the two games before it, Epic Battle Fantasy 3 plays much more similarly to a traditional RPG. It entails exploring a map full of monsters and treasures, doing battle with enemies in order to get stronger by obtaining XP and equipment. The map is split into several regions, each with a different theme and containing a boss at the end. The goal of each section is to defeat any enemies obstructing the way to the boss, and then defeat the boss to gain access to the next area. Due to the nature of this gameplay, EBF3 also includes a fully-implemented save feature, allowing you to save game data across seven slots.
Battles play out much like in EBF1 and 2; the player and enemy parties take turns using abilities to attack the other party, with the goal being to eliminate all waves of enemies before all of your party is killed. This time around, the team consists of Matt, Natalie, and Lance, who has befriended the heroic duo since the events of EBF2. Each character in this party has unique stats and abilities that can be utilized in battle. These abilities can be unlocked/upgraded using skill points you earn by leveling up your party. Most of these abilities are exclusive to one character in particular, but some can be assigned to either or two different characters. Also returning from EBF2 are Limit Breaks, super-powerful abilities that can only be used after a character has taken enough damage to fill up their rage meter.
With a fully-implemented world map, EBF3 also includes NPCs, many of which have quests which can be completed by giving the NPC whatever items they request. Some NPCs guard special areas that can only be accessed by collecting enough achievements.
Normal vs. Magic Attack/Defense[]
Like most traditional JRPGs, EBF3 distinguishes damage dealt between normal and magic. Normal attack damage mainly concerns physical attacks, while magic attack damage usually comes from spells and magic-powered attacks. On a similar note, normal defense only reduces damage against normal attacks while magic defense only reduces damage against magic attacks.
After-Game Bonus[]
After beating the game on any difficulty by defeating Akron, you're given the option to restart your game from the beginning with various bonuses. These bonuses include:
- Keeping weapons
- Keeping weapon levels
- Keeping skills
- Keeping items and gold
- Keeping experience levels
- No experience level limit
You can select as many of these bonuses as you want; the only caveat is that whatever difficulty level your game was on can't be changed.
Difficulty Settings[]
In EBF3, you can choose between four difficulty levels when starting a new game. This can't be changed during a game.
- Easy: Enemies are 30% weaker than normal.
- Normal: Enemies have normal stats.
- Hard: Enemies do 30% more damage than normal.
- Epic: Enemies do 60% more damage than normal and also have other buffs.
Minigames[]
EBF3 also brings back the concept of minigames that was first seen in EBF2. Since EBF3 has an overworld and is a much less linear game, these minigames can be accessed at any time by talking to the NPCs they correspond to. Playing minigames rewards you with gold - the better you do, the more gold you get!
- Food Catcher: You play as NoLegs the cat, and you have 100 seconds to catch as much food as you can as it flies and bounces across the screen. You can also use melee attacks to slow the food down. This minigame is operated by Sir Ken, an NPC in Vegetable Forest located right behind Jack (the boss of Vegetable Forest), so you have to defeat Jack in order to access this minigame.
- Narwhal Surf: You play as a narwhal, and you have 100 seconds to collect as many coins as you can while swimming through a rocky cave. Big rock and coral formations constantly show up as you're swimming and will make you lose coins if you touch them (10 in the flash version, 3 in the Steam version), so you'll need to avoid those. Luckily, the Narwhal is quite agile and has a very small hitbox, so dodging most of the obstacles is as simple as jumping in time. This minigame is operated by James, an NPC in Rock Lake located just a few screens before the Giant Squid.
- Cards in the Snow: This is a basic card memory game. You have a set of cards that are flipped over, and you have to flip them over to match all the pairs to win the game. There's no time limit, but you get more gold the faster you finish. This minigame is operated by Joanne, an NPC in Glacier Valley located in the underground volcano section.
- Ruin Raider: You play as NoLegs, and you have 100 seconds to collect as much treasure as you can by killing the Skeleton Cats that pop up from the ground. Touching a Skeleton Cat will stun you briefly. This minigame is operated by Dishi, an NPC in Kitten Kingdom Ruins located in one of the rooms to the right of the Protector's room.
- Rock Runner: You play as NoLegs riding on a flying star, and you have 100 seconds to collect as many coins as you can while flying through a volcanic canyon. It's pretty much the same as Narwhal Surf, but more challenging since in this game you have to avoid falling boulders in addition to rock formations sticking out of the ground and ceiling. This NPC is operated by Curly, an NPC in Volcano Peak located on an island blocked off by a Beholder (the miniboss of Volcano Peak), so you have to defeat the Beholder in order to access this minigame.
Medals[]
Just like in EBF2, EBF3 has a set of achievements that can be obtained by doing various tasks in the game. However, some of the Medals are hidden this time around, not showing you any descriptions on how to get them. Stats[]
Like any RPG ever, EBF3 employs a system of stats which determine various aspects of the characters in your party as they do battle with enemies. These stats include:
- Health Points (HP): The maximum amount of damage a character can take before dying.
- Mana Points (MP): The maximum amount of mana a character can accumulate to consume for using skills in battle.
- Attack: The overall physical damage output of a character.
- Magic Attack: The overall magic damage output of a character.
- Defense: Reduces the amount of physical damage a character takes.
- Magic Defense: Reduces the amount of magic damage a character takes.
- Accuracy: The overall chance of a character successfully hitting an enemy with an attack.
- Evade: The overall chance of a character successfully dodging an enemy's attack.
Elements[]
Just like in EBF1 and EBF2, EBF3 features elements that can be channeled by both your party and enemies to provide different attack methods. This time, though, characters in the game can now have elemental resistances and weaknesses. It's important to use this to your advantage by using equips and skills that enemies are weak to in order to win battles more easily. The elements are as follows:
- Fire: Fire attacks. Enemies with this element are usually weak to Water and Ice.
- Thunder: Electric attacks, which can sometimes stun targets. Works great against Water enemies, robots, and flying enemies, but not so much for Earth enemies.
- Ice: Frost attacks, which can sometimes freeze targets. Effective against Earth, Water, and Fire enemies.
- Earth: Ground- and stone-based attacks. Great at dealing with Ice and Lightning enemies, but not with flying or armored enemies.
- Poison: Deals almost exclusively in inflicting the Poison status on targets. Good for taking out animalistic enemies and enemies with high HP, but is useless against non-biological enemies (i.e. robots, the undead, and some Earth enemies).
- Bomb: Explosive attacks. Great against Earth and mechanical enemies, but not Ice and Fire enemies. Most enemies can't resist Bomb attacks.
- Wind: Air attacks, usually associated with speed and evasion. Can deal with flying and Fire enemies easily, but is weak against Earth enemies.
- Water: Aquatic attacks. Effective against Fire and Earth enemies.
- Holy: Light-themed attacks and "positive" magic. Aside from powerful attacks, this element is also associated with healing spells. Being the opposite of Dark, it is both effective against and weak to Dark enemies.
- Dark: Dark and cosmic attacks, also associated with the supernatural/undead. It is the most destructive element in the game, and is both effective against and weak to Holy enemies.
Status Effects[]
Status Effects are special conditions that can be inflicted on any character during battle through various attacks. Some help characters through various means, while others bring harm. They are as follows:
- Attack Up/Down: Increases or decreases the target's normal attacking power.
- Defense Up/Down: Increases or decreases the target's normal defense.
- Magic Attack Up/Down: Increases or decreases the target's magic attacking power.
- Magic Defense Up/Down: Increases or decreases the target's magic defense.
- Accuracy Up/Down: Increases or decreases the target's accuracy.
- Evade Up/Down: Increases or decreases the target's evade.
- Dispel: Removes any buffs and positive effects from the target.
- Syphon: Prevents the target from using anything except normal physical attacks.
- Stun: The target is stunned and can't do anything.
- Freeze: The target is frozen in ice and can't do anything. The target takes extra damage if attacked while Frozen.
- Poison: The target loses some HP every turn.
- Doom: Instantly kills the target after a few turns.
- Death: Instantly kills the target regardless of their HP.
- Berserk: The target becomes more aggressive and does more damage . If a party member goes Berserk, that party member can't be controlled and will randomly attack an enemy with a powerful physical attack on the party's turn.
- Regen: Automatically restores some of the target's HP at the start of every turn.
- Auto-Revive: Allows the target to instantly revive if killed.

Bosses[]
Jack[]
Jack is a giant robotic pumpkin who is the boss of Vegetable Garden. Being a mechanical entity, he's weak to Earth, Thunder, and Bomb attacks, so each of the party members can deal heavy damage to him even this early in the game. Attack-wise, he mostly relies on strong physical attacks and the weaponry hidden inside his body, which include a flamethrower and machine guns. However, he can't use those weapons if you Syphon him.
Every few turns, Jack can call in reinforcements. These reinforcements consist of weak enemies like Green Bushes and Kitten Soldiers, but you'll still want to take them out as quickly as possible so you can focus on Jack. If you want to take Jack down especially quickly, you can use Hand Bombs if you have any - at this point in the game, most items are extremely powerful due to most of the enemies being so low-level.
Giant Squid[]
The Giant Squid is the boss of Rock Lake. It mostly uses Water and Ice attacks, as is natural for an aquatic animal. However, its Squid Arms can sometimes inflict Poison, and the Squid itself can spit ink to lower your party's accuracy. The Giant Squid is weak to Ice and Thunder, so using powerful abilities with those elements along with Poison will help you drain its health quickly.
The Giant Squid's arms, despite being part of the Squid itself, act as separate entities and can be defeated in order to reduce the Giant Squid's movepool and damage output. However, the Squid can regenerate the arms every few turns, which also buffs its defense and attack. It can also summon other enemies every few turns; these include low- to mid-level enemies such as Blue Slimes, Blue Clays, and Spiral Crabs. Two Spiral Crabs will automatically be summoned once you kill the Giant Squid, and the Squid Arms will still be alive if they weren't already killed, so you'll have to kill them separately if you kill the Squid first.
Tundra Mammoth[]
The Tundra Mammoth is one of the last living woolly mammoths left on the planet. It's the boss of Glacier Valley. The Tundra Mammoth uses lots of heavy-hitting physical attacks, along with a few Ice attacks here and there that can Freeze your party, so gearing up with high-level equips is highly recommended. Aside from that, the Tundra Mammoth also summons a wide variety of enemies, ranging from weaker enemies like Ice Bits and Fire Bits to stronger ones like Holy Eyes, Glacier Eaters, Ice Elementals, or even Viking Monoliths. The Bits are summoned passively while the Tundra Mammoth attacks, so make sure to be prepared in case any Fire Bits show up, because those will suicide bomb your party as soon as they join the fray. It also summons two Fire Bits when defeated.
Being an ice-dwelling animal, the Tundra Mammoth is naturally weak to Fire attacks. However, it has an even greater weakness to Poison. So if you want to bring its health down quickly, stack up a lot of Poison on the Tundra Mammoth by spamming abilities like Nettle, Toxic, and Poison Gas if you've learned any of those. Doing this will eventually lead to the Tundra Mammoth taking huge amounts of damage each turn. However, you should also use defense-buffing and healing spells on your party often to ensure that all your characters can adequately withstand the punishing attacks of the Tundra Mammoth and its allies. Regen is especially useful since its automatic healing effects can negate the effects of Freeze if it's inflicted on the party.
Protector[]
The Protector is a huge stone robot built in ancient times to protect the Kitten Kingdom, thus appearing as the boss of Kitten Kingdom Ruins. Much like Jack, it's weak to Bomb and Thunder attacks, as well as Water. Using Bomb abilities are your best ability here since a lot of the enemies the Protector summons can be easily disposed of with Bomb attacks. Most of its attacks consist of physical attacks that can deal non-elemental, Earth, or Bomb damage as it attacks your party members with its drills and cannons. However, it can sometimes spend a turn to suck in tons of energy particles to charge up its energy cannon, which it will then fire on its next turn to deal massive magic damage that can either be Thunder or non-elemental. If the energy cannon fires a Thunder beam, it has a high chance of Stunning the party.
Aside from these powerful attacks, the Protector can also summon a large amount of strong enemies, chief among them being Runes. It can also summon other tough enemies like Light and Dark Clays, Slingers, and Thunderbirds. These enemies should be dealt with swiftly since most of them can prove to be a major nuisance if left unchecked. This is especially true of healer-type enemies like Light Clays and Holy Runes, as their healing effects are quite strong.
Beholder[]
The Beholder is a grotesque, evolved form of the Eyeball enemy. It appears twice in Volcano Peak as a miniboss, with the second encounter being optional. Besides using the laser attacks that normal Eyeballs use, the Beholder has tentacles it can use to attack by whipping or - disturbingly enough - make love to the players. The tentacle attacks have a chance to inflict Poison, especially the love-making "Censored" attack. Thus, using equips with high Poison resistance is a good idea. Funnily enough, the Beholder is also weak to Poison, as well as Thunder, so any Poison and Thunder skills at your disposal will do a good job at dealing heavy damage to the Beholder, especially if you stack up a lot of Poison on the Beholder like you would with the Tundra Mammoth.
Unlike most bosses, the Beholder can't summon any enemies, but it will begin each of its battles with some at its side. In the first encounter, it's accompanied by two Eyeballs. In the second encounter, it's accompanied by two Dark Bushes.
Pyrohydra[]
The Pyrohydra is a three-headed dragon which is the boss of Volcano Peak. Each of its three heads is a separate unit with vastly different weaknesses, resistances, and attacks - but they all absorb Fire and are immune to Bomb. Abyss, the red-eyed head, uses Dark and Poison attacks and is weak to Thunder and Holy attacks. Blaze, the yellow-eyed head, uses Fire attacks and is weak to Ice, Water, and Wind attacks. Czars, the white-eyed head, uses a wide variety of attacks (mainly Holy), heals his allies, dispels your party, and is weak to Earth and Dark attacks. Although each of the heads have powerful attacks at their disposal, it's best to bulk up on Dark resistance since Abyss's attacks are usually the most devastating. High Fire resistance isn't a bad idea either.
Before you do anything to the Pyrohydra heads themselves, note that they start the battle with two Fire Bits by their side, so make sure to get rid of them to avoid their self-destruct attack. Once that's done, focus all your firepower on Czars - not only is he the healer of the group, able to cast powerful healing spells like Regen, but he also has the most diverse range of attacks...besides Holy attacks, Czars can also use Fire, Thunder, and Ice attacks! In short, Czars can make the battle a lot more difficult with all his abilities, so it's best to take him out first. Use any non-Holy Limit Breaks if you have any available, and then use Dark and Poison attacks on Czars to do heavy damage and counteract his healing abilities. Poison stacking works well here since Czars can't remove negative status effects from himself. Also make sure to keep your party's HP and defense up high to survive against the Pyrohydra's triple assault. If Czars casts Regen on the group, use Dispel to cancel it out. If you're feeling extra daring, equip Natalie with the Death Bringer staff and have her use Dark Runes to cast Doomsday whenever it's her turn to deal massive Dark damage to Czars (this will also do a number on Blaze but won't affect Abyss).
Once Czars is down, use the same strategy on each of the other two heads - focus your attacks on a single head and bombard it with its weaknesses! An important thing to note here is that Poison attacks don't work on either of the remaining heads - Blaze is immune, and Abyss absorbs it.
Abyss would be a good choice to go after next since his attacks can inflict a number of problematic status effects on your party, including Poison, Doom, and Death. Make sure to keep healing and buffing your party, and use Holy and Thunder attacks on Abyss. After you finish him off, take care of Blaze using any Ice, Water, and Wind spells you have in your arsenal.
There are a couple things to keep in mind when dealing with the Pyrohydra. Whenever you defeat one of the heads, the remaining head(s) will get buffed; Abyss gets his magic attack and magic defense buffed, Blaze gets his normal attack and normal defense buffed, and Czars gets his accuracy and evade buffed. Also, once you kill two heads, the last head will be able to summon more enemies to aid him. They all summon high-tier enemies! If Abyss is the last head alive, he'll summon Swift Crows, Holy Eyes, Dark Clays, and Skull Ghosts. If Blaze is the last head alive, he'll summon Eyeballs, Drill Bots, Red Clays, and Fire Bits. If Czars is the last head alive, he'll summon Ancient Eyes, Mage Birds, and Light Clays.
Akron[]
At the heart of the rift lies Akron, the ancient demonic deity who stole your powers and weapons, and is now threatening to drain the planet of all its power to satisfy his hunger for power. It's time to send him back to the void! Unlike any other enemy in the game, Akron isn't bound to any one element - he randomly switches between six different elemental forms, which is indicated by the color of the large gem on his body: Fire (red), Thunder (yellow), Ice (blue), Earth (brown), Holy (white), and Dark (black). Additionally, Akron also has two different forms, those being his upper body and his lower body, with the latter usually being hidden underground. Akron switches back and forth between these two forms after taking enough damage (usually after losing about 1/15th of his health).
Akron always starts the battle in his upper form, and he immediately summons two Rune Claws (more on those later). Akron's upper form has a wide variety of elemental attacks, but he always uses one of them much more often than the rest. This is determined by the element he's currently using: if he's using Fire or Holy, he usually uses fire lasers that can Berserk your party; if he's using Thunder, he usually uses electric lasers that can Stun your party; if he's using Ice, he usually uses an ice volley that can Freeze your party; if he's using Earth, he usually uses an earthquake attack; if he's using Dark, he usually uses a scream attack that can Dispel your party. This shouldn't be too much of an issue to counter since at this point, you should have most if not all of the players' skills purchased so you'll always be able to exploit Akron's weaknesses. Likewise, you don't need to worry too much about constantly switching equips since the attacks from Akron's upper form aren't terribly damaging. Rather, you should focus on high Dark resistance - just like with the Pyrohydra - since Akron's lower form and most of the enemies he summons use very powerful Dark attacks. Another thing to note about Akron's upper form is that while using this form, he's able to summon Rune Claws - very powerful technomagical drones that are bound to Akron himself, and thus use whichever elemental affinity he's using at the time (e.g. if Akron is using Fire, the Rune Claws will mainly use Fire attacks) alongside some strong non-elemental attacks. The Rune Claws have really high evade, so the best way to take them out is to debuff their evade first, and then use powerful attacks to get rid of them quickly.
When switching between his upper and lower forms, Akron can summon some other top-tier enemies for backup. These include Dark Clays, Skull Ghosts, and even Cosmic Monoliths once his health gets low enough. As with all enemies during this battle, make sure to kill these ones as quickly as possible so they don't cause problems!
When Akron switches to his lower form, the first thing he does is summon two enemies: one Evil Worm and one Evil Tail. Definitely focus on killing those first since they can inflict all sorts of nasty status effects on your party, including Poison, Doom, and Death. As for Akron, his lower form mostly uses strong Dark, Bomb, and non-elemental attacks. Keeping up your defense and healing your party is especially important here, as Akron can wipe you out easily in this form if you're not careful. On the bright side, Akron can't change his element in this form, so this is a good time to hit him as hard as you can before he goes back to his upper form.
Glitches[]
- The Earth Elemental's melee attacks deal Ice damage when they were meant to deal Earth damage. This is likely because the melee attacks were copied and pasted from the Ice Elemental's movepool and the developer forgot to change them accordingly.
- Akron was supposed to have a healing ability that would've allowed him to cast Regen on himself and his allies; he would've been able to use this as his default attack when using the Holy element. However, due to a programming error, this isn't the case, as he instead uses his Fire attack as the default attack while using the Holy element.
Trivia[]
- Some of the bosses in Epic Battle Fantasy 2 appear in this game, in one form or another.
- The Golem enemies' gimmick of losing limbs and abilities is similar to how the Guardian from EBF2 has sword and shield attachments that can be destroyed to cripple its fighting prowess, and their design is inspired by the Giga Golem from EBF2.
- The Sandworm returns from EBF2 as a high-tier enemy, but its tail is absent.
- Both the Zombie Dragon and the Pyrohydra were inspired by the Zombie Hydra from EBF2.
- One enemy wave in the Rift even references the Zombie Hydra directly by having the player fight two Zombie Dragons at once. The only difference is that the Zombie Dragons can't revive each other as the Zombie Hydra's heads could.
- Akron is named after the dark lord in Rhapsody of Fire's lyrics.
- Coincidentally, he also shares his name with a city in Ohio called Akron.
- The Kitten Kingdom Ruins reuse the music that was used for the desert area in EBF2.
