Orisinal: Morning Sunshine is a collection of Flash games and related projects by Ferry Halim.[1]
Orisinal, also stylized as "OrisinAl"[2] or "Orisinal Games"[3], is a registered LLC under Halim's name that began October 25, 2000[4] as a website to showcase the creator's games and visual demos in Adobe Flash. About a year after the website's premiere, over a dozen visual demos were scrapped from the site, leaving a collection of only a select few games that Halim rebranded as the "Morning Sunshine" collection.[5] The collection continued to grow over the years and remained on Halim's personal website until December 2020, when Adobe Flash was discontinued. Halim contributed the graphics and programming for all games in the collection, and although some of the musical scores are credited to Steven Cravis,[6] Ernesto Cortazar,[7] and Mami Ishizuka,[8] Halim has admitted to taking some of the other music from random Japanese songs without attribution.[9]
At its peak, Morning Sunshine was one of the best known collections of Flash games on the Internet, with roughly 1 million visitors per month.[10] In 2003, it won a best-in-class Webby Award for "Websites and Mobile Sites - Games"[11] as well as a World Summit Award for its innovative design.[12] In 2004, it received an award for "outstanding achievement in artistic expression" from JayIsGames.com.[13]
Etymology
Born in Padang, Indonesia,[9] Ferry Halim is likely fluent in Indonesian and may have titled his website after the Indonesian word "orisinal", which means "original" in English.[14] This possibility is consistent with Halim's use of the tagline "nothing is original" in several of his custom wallpapers that were once available to download from the site.[15]
Games
Games in the Morning Sunshine collection are displayed in an interactive grid of square, desaturated icons that float and saturate during mouse-over.
New games were added to the grid every few months until the last game was added in 2013. In the Orisinal games list below, titles are ordered according to their position in the interactive grid.

Flight of Fire
Flight of Fire is notable for being Ferry Halim's only game created in the style of Orisinal: Morning Sunshine to receive an iOS-exclusive release. Halim advertised the game in banners on the Orisinal: Morning Sunshine website, starting in late 2010.[31][32] The game was released November 1, 2010[33][34] and sold for $0.99 USD in the iOS App Store (App ID: 400047220).[33] On the in-game start screen, it is presented as a game by "AnotherCorner"[35], the name of a separate website Halim created just for the game.[36]
When it was still listed in the App Store, the app's description (grammatical errors included) read: [33][34]
Get ready for a blazing fast ride!
Flight of Fire is a fast speed action game sets in a faraway land. Fly on your magic carpet and blast the enemies off the night sky!
Gameplay
In Flight of Fire, the player takes control of an Arabian-clad cat wearing a turban.[37] Over a cityscape strewn with minarets, the cat rides a flying magic carpet through the night sky.[37] The objective of the game is to accumulate points by shooting streaks of fire at the incoming bat-like enemies and eliminating as many as possible before the timer reaches zero.[37] Bonus items, including energy, bombs, and shield power-ups, can be collected along the way.[38] Movement is controlled by tilting the device up or down, and attacks are triggered by tapping the screen.[38] Waiting longer to attack will result in a more powerful blast of fire.[38]
Current status
Flight of Fire has not been preserved in any known archives and may be lost forever.[39] If rediscovered, the game is theoretically playable on modern computers using the touchHLE emulator, which allows players to launch directly into iOS games without the hassle of configuring an emulated device.[40]

Other projects
A "Miscellaneous" section appears at the bottom of the Morning Sunshine collection. Some of the icons in this section simply act as links to other pages of the website, but a few showcase other projects Halim created in Adobe Flash.
Icon | Feature | Notes |
---|---|---|
Online Store | Originally linked to www.cafepress.com/orisinal where clocks, mugs, t-shirts, and tote bags with Orisinal characters could be purchased as late as May 2011; sometime later, the icon was redirected to another page of Halim's own site and replaced with a list of Android and iOS ports available for purchase | |
Flowers | Flash application that allowed the user to pick flowers, stretch or rotate them, arrange them in a vase, choose a backdrop, and email the resulting image to a friend with a custom message | |
Guestbook | Flash application that was originally a cyberpunk-themed guestbook with minimal features; it was redesigned early in the site's history to accommodate more of the aesthetic themes from the Morning Sunshine collection, allowing visitors to dress-up Orisinal-style creatures and include them alongside the visitors' signed messages | |
Wallpapers | Flash application that allowed the user to browse and download wallpapers created by Ferry Halim; it was present on the site as late as September 2009[41] but was delisted by December 2009[42] | |
Tell a Friend | This icon opens a pop-up window with a Flash application that will allow the user to email a link to Ferry Halim's website to a friend | |
Link Back | This icon redirects to another webpage with a list of graphics for buttons or banners that users are allowed to host on their own websites in order to link to Ferry Halim's website | |
Rain | Flash application that displayed a photo of a Japanese shrine with poetry along the bottom of the screen and an infinitely repeating loop of animated rain with accompanying sound | |
Kite | Seen in a screenshot from 2003,[43] this icon was delisted from the site sometime in the early-to-mid aughts, but based on an archived sitemap,[44] it appears to have linked to Halim's "Kite" demo, a minimalistic Flash application in which the user controls a hand that is holding the string of a kite and can perform two simple tricks | |
Trailer 2001 | Animated Flash trailer that Halim produced in 2001 to showcase the Morning Sunshine collection | |
Alphabets | Seen in a screenshot from 2003,[43] this icon was delisted from the site sometime in the early-to-mid aughts, but based on an archived sitemap,[44] it appears to have linked to Halim's "Alphabets" Flash experiment, in which the text "watch the words coming out of your mouth" is followed by an endless stream of random letters shooting out of an abstract sculpture |
Flowers
"Flowers" lets visitors arrange bouquets of flowers and email them to their friends with an attached message.
Guestbook
The guestbook allowed visitors to dress-up Orisinal-style creatures and include them alongside signed messages for other visitors to read.
Wallpapers
Ferry Halim created a collection of wallpaper designs that visitors could download. The feature was delisted from his site sometime between September and December of 2009.
Rain
"Rain" is a photo of a Japanese shrine with animated rain falling in a continuous loop. A soft guitar tune plays, and across the bottom of the screen, a poem reads, "I love the sound of the rain / Unfortunately it's not easy to hear it anymore / My apartment walls won't let me listen / So I just wait... and wait / And the rain would fall / And I will step outside to listen."
Trailer (2001)
Ferry Halim created a trailer for Orisinal in 2001, showcasing some of his earliest games.
Music
Although most games in the Orisinal: Morning Sunshine collection do not include credits for the music, there are a few exceptions:
- Critical Zone
- Music: "Critical Zone" by Steven Cravis
- Bubble Bees
- Music: "Through the Kaleidoscope" by Steven Cravis
- Pocketful of Stars
- Music: "想いの行方 / Omoi no Yukue" ("Whereabouts of Thoughts") by Mami Ishizuka
- Note: This track was originally composed by Mami Ishizuka for the Japanese anime series Kimagure Orange Road (1984-1987) and was eventually released on one of the anime's many soundtrack albums, Madoka's Piano Files (1996), on which the song is falsely attributed to the anime's main protagonist, Madoka Ayukawa, as part of a marketing gimmick. This is why many online sources provide seemingly conflicting information about the song.
- The Perilous Voyage
- Music: "Mystical Myst" by Steven Cravis
- Flowers
- Music: "Our Love Never Dies" by Ernesto Cortazar
Ferry Halim has publicly admitted that many of his other games in the Morning Sunshine collection use uncredited Japanese songs.[9]
How to play without Flash
After Adobe Flash was deprecated from web browsers in December 2020, Ferry Halim's website became unusable for most visitors, and the site now displays a message that reads, "Unfortunately Flash Player is no longer supported after 2020." Even though the website is not working, there are still ways to access and play Orisinal: Morning Sunshine games without Flash:
Online solutions
- Ruffle is an open-source Flash emulator with an available Chromium extension and Firefox extension. Adding the extension to your web browser will allow you to play games again on the official Orisinal website.
- Without any setup or browser extension, you can play the complete Morning Sunshine collection at NuMuKi.com right now.
Offline solutions
- Flashpoint is an open-source project that features an in-app searchable database of thousands of fully restored Flash games. If you download and install Flashpoint, you can play the complete Orisinal: Morning Sunshine collection offline.
- You can download the complete collection of files for yourself and attempt to restore them with JPEXS, the free Flash decompiler. It may also help if you have local copies of Basilisk and the Adobe Flash 32 Debugger.
