Swords & Souls is a game developed by Soulgame Studio, set in the same world as Rogue Soul. It combines RPG and idle elements in which you face waves of enemies in turn-based combat and train your soul through various minigames to train your skills.

Controls[]

  • Mouse: menu navigation, combat, and minigames
  • WASD or arrow keys: directions in minigames
  • 1-6 keys: skills
  • Space: alternative trigger for super critical in combat

Plot[]

A lowly soul living in Soul Town wants to make it big in the battle arena, but doesn't have the skill to take on the rough and tough brawlers dominating the arena. Luckily, a living scarecrow named Sir Scarow takes the young lad under his wing and offers to train him to become a mighty warrior. Now the soul warrior must train up, fight battles, and rake in big money to become the greatest arena champion of all time!

Gameplay[]

The gameplay of Swords & Souls has two main parts: training and battling. Training involves you playing minigames to increase your soul's stats so he can become strong enough to defeat tougher enemies. There are five minigames, each one representing a different stat, and you can play them whenever and for however long you want. Battling entails entering the arena and playing through its fights. Each fight comprises a series of enemies back-to-back, ending in a (stronger) boss enemy, with the goal naturally being to live to defeat them all. Winning a fight for the first time awards a chest containing some money and resources such as clovers, potions, and scrolls, and also unlocks the next fight. Both training and defeating enemies in the arena award XP which goes to levelling up your soul. Gaining levels grants various points which can be used to increase stats and upgrade a number of passive and active abilities. There are also a few other locations you can visit—namely the museum, home, and shop—which each provide unique modes of progression throughout the game.

The Hero[]

The hero menu allows you to view your soul's stats, skills, and talents, as well as to upgrade them using points acquired through gaining levels.

Stats[]

These are your soul's most basic stats. They can be upgraded both by spending skill points on them and by playing the Training minigames.

  • Strength: Determines the amount of damage you do with melee attacks. Melee attacks are your basic attack that the soul performs automatically unless you activate a skill for him to use.
  • Accuracy: Determines the amount of damage you do with ranged attacks, as well as the chance of a ranged attack being triggered. Ranged attacks are triggered randomly, and the soul still gets to use a melee attack or skill after using a ranged attack.
  • Block: Determines the amount of health you have and the chances you'll block an enemy's attack with your shield.
  • Dodge: Determines the amount of health you have and the chances you'll dodge an enemy's attack.
  • Critical: Determines the amount of health you have and the chances you'll score a Critical Hit. Critical Hits are triggered randomly and deal double damage by default, but if you click anywhere on the screen at the right time, the attack will become a Super Critical Hit which deals triple damage instead (this amount can be increased even further by upgrading the Deadly talent).

Skills[]

These are special abilities that you can use to give yourself an edge over your enemies. Each one has to be activated by either clicking on its icon or pressing its hotkey in order to use it, and enters a cooldown once used.

  • Double Slash (Hotkey 1, Unlocked at Hero Level 2): Lets you perform a more advanced melee attack that hits an enemy twice and has a small chance to weaken the enemy so they deal less damage. Upgrading this skill increases the chances your enemy will be weakened.
  • Shield Bash (Hotkey 2, Unlocked at Hero Level 6): Lets you bash an enemy with your shield to stun them for a few seconds. Upgrading this skill makes the stun last longer.
  • Toxic Stab (Hotkey 3, Unlocked at Hero Level 12): Lets you perform a melee attack that poisons an enemy, causing their health to drain over time. Upgrading this skill decreases its cooldown.
  • Magic Protection (Hotkey 4, Unlocked at Hero Level 25): Lets you use a magic spell to buff your defense, temporarily making you take less damage from enemies' attacks. Upgrading this skill makes the defense buff last longer and increases the amount of damage reduced by the buff.
  • Heal (Hotkey 5, Unlocked at Hero Level 35): Lets you use a magic spell to heal yourself. Upgrading this skill increases the amount of health this skill restores.
  • Omnisoul (Hotkey 6, Unlocked at Hero Level 50): Lets you perform an extra-powerful melee attack that hits an enemy many times. Upgrading this skill increases the number of times this attack hits the enemy.

Talents[]

These are extra bonus skills that add other helpful effects to your soul in various ways.

  • Brutal (Unlocked at Level 3): Gives a small chance that a normal melee attack will stun an enemy for three seconds. Upgrading this talent increases the chances of the stun taking effect.
  • Sneaky (Unlocked at Level 3): Gives a small chance that an enemy will drop Soulings (small pearls that give you XP when collected) when attacked. Upgrading this talent increases the chances of the Souling drop taking effect.
  • Impatient (Unlocked at Level 3): Decreases the cooldowns of all your skills. Upgrading this talent decreases the cooldowns even more.
  • Treacherous (Unlocked at Level 15): Gives a small chance that a ranged attack will poison an enemy. Upgrading this talent increases the chances of the poison taking effect.
  • Vampiric (Unlocked at Level 15): Gives a small chance that you regain a small amount of health back when you kill an enemy.  Upgrading this talent increases the chances of the healing taking effect.
  • Lucky (Unlocked at Level 15): Increases the chances of Clovers spawning during a Training minigame or Arena battle. Upgrading this talent increases the chances of Clovers spawning even more.
  • Alchemist (Unlocked at Level 32): Increases the effectiveness of all potions. Upgrading this talent increases potion effectiveness even more.
  • Deadly (Unlocked at Level 32): Increases the amount of damage dealt from Super Critical Hits. Upgrading this skill increases the damage done by Super Critical Hits even more.
  • Blessed (Unlocked at Level 32): Gives a small chance that you'll be revived with full health when you get killed by an enemy. Upgrading this skill increases the chances of being revived even more.

The Museum[]

The museum is mostly an information hub, but also serves as a financial service as it generates money over time that you can collect whenever you want.

Museum Income[]

The Museum Income is the feature that allows you to collect some of the money that the museum makes from its revenue. Every minute, the museum generates some money and puts part of that money towards your share, which you may collect by clicking on the money bag on the clerk's desk. Or, if you leave the game and then come back to it later, the game will automatically give you all the money in your share generated by the museum in the time you were gone.

Initially, the amount of money put into your share is a miniscule amount, but it can be raised by both directly upgrading the Income to increase your share and by contributing to the museum by unlocking more features in all of its exhibits.

Champy[]

This friendly champroom lives in the museum and feeds on Clovers which are randomly awarded occasionally during training and Arena fights. Whenever you feed Champy a Clover, he gives you a reward. This reward can be any of the following:

  • Money
  • Soulings
  • Shop Coupon

  • A rare painting

Swords & Souls - The Rogue's Note

Rogue Soul's note to the player, viewable after the Training room is around 90% upgraded

The Training room is where you go to raise your soul's stats by playing minigames to earn XP and stat points. Each minigame gives you XP and stat points for the corresponding stat as you play. You can increase the rate at which you earn XP and stat points from these minigames by upgrading the Training room, which also adds more decorations to the room as you upgrade it more.

Each minigame has a different objective to perform in order to earn points, as well as an optional Perfect objective you can do to get extra points.

Strength Training[]

  • Objective: Sir Scarow constantly spits apples at you. The apples fly at various heights as he spits them; depending on how high the apples fly, use the up, right, and down arrow keys to strike the apples with your weapon so they don't hit you.
  • Perfect Objective: Stars sometimes fall behind you. When a star is right next to you, use the left key to lunge back and collect it for bonus points.

Block Training[]

  • Objective: Apples come at you from all directions. Using your mouse to control your shield, maneuver the shield around you to block the apples from hitting you.
  • Perfect Objective: Sometimes stars will come at you. To collect a star, let it hit you for bonus points.

Accuracy Training[]

  • Objective: Archery targets constantly appear and disappear, with some floating in one place while others move around the screen. Using your mouse to aim and clicking to fire, shoot arrows at the targets before they disappear.
  • Perfect Objective: Hit targets in their centers for bonus points.

Dodge Training[]

  • Objective: Sir Scarow constantly tries to attack you with his body, attempting to either bodyslam you, whack you with his arms, or sweep you with his single wooden leg. Depending on which attack he uses, use the up, left, and down arrow keys to dodge him.
  • Perfect Objective: Dodge Sir Scarow's attacks at the last possible second for bonus points.

Critical Training[]

  • Objective: Sir Scarow will command you to either attack him or do nothing, When he orders you to attack, click anywhere on the screen to attack and land a Critical Hit.
  • Perfect Objective: Earn bonus points by not doing anything when Sir Scarow tells you to stay still and by scoring a Super Critical Hit on Sir Scarow when attacking him.

Shop[]

The Shop is where you can use some of your hard-earned money from battles and training to buy new gear to get stronger, as well as spells and potions to give yourself an edge over your enemies. However, if you have a Shop Coupon, you can use it to buy something for free. Each Coupon is a single-use item.

Equipment[]

  • Melee Weapons: Increases damage done by your melee attacks.
  • Armors: Increases your max HP.
  • Shields: Increases the amount of damage that gets blocked when you block an enemy's attack.
  • Ranged Weapons: Increases damage done by your ranged attacks.

Spells[]

  • Fireball Spell: Shoots a huge fireball that deals massive damage to an enemy.
  • Poison Spell: Shoots a poison cloud that deals moderate damage and poisons an enemy.
  • Lightning Spell: Shoots a lightning bolt that deals heavy damage and stuns an enemy.

Potions[]

  • Health Potion: Restores some of your health.
  • Energy Potion: Shortens the cooldowns of your skills.
  • Strength Potion: Increases the damage done from all of your attacks.

Home[]

The Home is a location whose sole purpose is to boost the amount of money and XP you obtain from other parts of the game. Upgrading the Home allows you to build a new part of the Home, which in turn increases the factor by which the money and XP you get from the game is multiplied, but the cost of upgrading the Home increases each time. Once the Home is fully upgraded, all money and XP you gain is multiplied by 10.

Arena[]

The Arena is the "main" part of the game, where you go to pit your soul against enemies and try to beat them all. These battles take place across a set of levels, each having various amounts of enemies to take on. Combat in these battles uses a combination of turn-based and real-time combat; you and the enemy take turns attacking each other, attacking automatically for the most part. You have the option to select a skill, spell, or potion to use on your following turn; otherwise, your soul will make a basic melee attack by default.

The objective of each level is quite simple: defeat all the enemies to win; otherwise, you lose if an enemy defeats you. Winning each level for the first time rewards you with a huge amount of money that you can use to upgrade your soul, which is very necessary to do because the enemies in each level are stronger than the ones in the previous level.

Standard Levels[]

These are the Arena's standard levels, unlocked in linear fashion. Each one has a predetermined sequence of enemies. The last enemy in each of these levels is a King enemy, which is just a normal enemy whose health and attack power are significantly higher to make them tougher to defeat.

Extra Levels[]

  • Survival: This level is unlocked after beating Battle 30. It has you fight an endless onslaught of random enemies, in waves of five enemies each. The enemies become stronger with each wave.
  • The Final Battle: This level is unlocked by beating at least 25 waves in Survival before dying. In this level, Sir Scarow is impressed with your combat prowess and decides to challenge you himself, so you must beat him in a duel. Sir Scarow has insanely high health and attack power, and can be extremely difficult if not impossible to defeat if you are underprepared.

Errors[]

  • Some King enemies have crowns on their heads, but others don't.
  • The Goblin Engineer's sprite was reused from Rogue Soul 2 where he appeared as a boss, so he's shown with his jetpacks facing forward. However, since all enemies stand still in Swords & Souls, this actually defies the laws of physics; if actual physics applied, the Goblin Engineer would keep flying straight ahead continuously until he ran into something.
  • The Borin Hood in Battle 30 is named Shiro96 as a homage to the Kongregate user of the same name.

Glitches[]

  • Sometimes, when entering the Arena's level select screen, some of the levels' names will glitch out and display placeholder text ("The Mole", "The KoboldBilious", etc.) instead of their proper names. It's unknown what exactly triggers this glitch.

Trivia[]

  • Some of the Arena's level names are references to goblins and orcs in popular culture.
    • Kezan is the name of a tropical island inhabited by goblins in World of Warcraft.
    • Lok'tar is the Orcish word for 'victory' in World of Warcraft, usually said as part of the battle-cry "lok'tar ogar," meaning "victory or death".
    • Grishnahk is the name of an orc captain from Lord of the Rings.
